The airport buzzes with energy as I sit here waiting for my flight to Salt Lake City, Utah, for RootsTech 2025! This year’s conference is an especially meaningful one for me. It’s my third time attending, my second year as a speaker, and... perhaps most exciting of all, my first time sharing this experience with my husband! Being able to walk through the massive expo hall together, explore the countless vendor booths, and soak in the electric atmosphere of the genealogy community is something I’ve looked forward to for months.
Once I land at 11 AM MT, the whirlwind truly begins. RootsTech is known for its vast expo hall, filled with vendors showcasing the latest genealogy tools, websites, and products. Authors will be there promoting their books, genealogical societies will be highlighting their areas of expertise, and passionate researchers will be exchanging knowledge. Every year, I’m amazed by the wealth of resources available, from DNA analysis advancements to historical archives that help break down long-standing brick walls in research.
My RootsTech 2025 Sessions
This year, I’m honored to present three sessions, each touching on different but equally important aspects of genealogy and DNA research:
1. "Using DNA to Reveal Biological Relationships for Adopted Persons or Those with Unexpected Paternity" with Dr. Penny Walters
📅 Thursday, March 6 | 8:00 AM - 9:00 AM MT
In this session, we’ll explore how DNA testing can provide answers for adopted persons, donor-conceived individuals, and those who receive unexpected parentage results (NPEs). We’ll discuss strategies, ethical considerations, and how to navigate these life-changing discoveries with sensitivity and accuracy.
2. "Uncovering Connections: Genetic Genealogy, Empathy, and the NPE Community" with Kate Penney Howard and Jennifer Schweibinz
📅 Friday, March 7 | 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM MT
Join Aimee, Jennifer, and Kate as they explore the intersection of genetic genealogy, empathy, and the NPE community. This session will delve into the history of genealogy, the impact of consumer DNA testing, and how to approach NPE discoveries with compassion. With expertise in genetic research, misattributed parentage, and sensitive conversations, they provide a thoughtful and inclusive discussion for all audiences.
3. "Unveiling Family Legacies: Verifying Native American Ancestry and Tribal Affiliation"
📅 Friday, March 7 | 8:00 AM MT (Webinar)
Tracing Native American ancestry involves more than a family story; it requires historical records, tribal documentation, and geographical context. This session will explore the distinction between federally and non-federally recognized tribes, key records like Dawes Packets, and essential research tools. Attendees will gain insight into tribal enrollment requirements and the steps to verify and honor their Native American heritage
The Theme: "Who I Am"
RootsTech 2025’s theme, "Who I Am," resonates deeply with everyone who attends. Genealogy isn’t just about names and dates—it’s about identity, connection, and understanding our place in the larger story of history. This year’s keynote speakers include inspiring figures like Ndaba Mandela, Dana Tanamachi, Tara Davis-Woodhall, and Hunter Woodhall, each bringing unique perspectives on identity and heritage.
As I sit here, ready to embark on another unforgettable journey at RootsTech, I’m reminded why I do this work. Genealogy isn’t just a hobby—it’s a way to reconnect with our past, help others find their truths, and celebrate the incredible diversity of our family histories.
Salt Lake City, here I come! See you all at RootsTech 2025!
